It's time for the new Monthly Movie Review from 8wire, courtesy of yours truly, Exist. With a huge closing for 2009(see Avatar, Sherlock Holmes), 2010 needs a few openers to get us back in the theaters. Thus, the list of movies I think you should see, as well as some honorable mentions that have potential for the next six months.

We'll be organizing this by month, so starting with January 15, 2010:

The Book of Eli - From IMDB.COM "A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind." With Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Ray Stevenson. The trailer for this movie gave me chills. I couldn't wait to see this movie. Not only is my favorite actor (Washington) in it, he's also doing all of his own choreographed fight scenes. Get some at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1037705/

If a gritty, post-apoc movie with amazing actors isn't really in your tastes, you should really reconsider your life. Or, you could just go watch:

The Spy Next Door - From IMDB.COM "Former CIA spy Bob Ho (Chan) takes on his toughest assignment to date: looking after his girlfriend's three kids, who haven't exactly warmed to their mom's beau. And when one of the youngsters accidentally downloads a top-secret formula, Bob's longtime nemesis, a Russian terrorist, pays a visit to the family." I'm always down to watch a Jackie Chan flick, and while this reads a lot like The Pacifier, Jackie > Vin. The Trailer was entertaining, and with an amusing supporting cast, I'm hoping the movie will be fun, if not good. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1273678/

January 22, 2010:

Legion - From IMDB.Com "An out-of-the-way diner becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race. When God loses faith in humankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the Apocalypse. Humanity's only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner with the Archangel Michael" Starring Paul Bettany, Kevin Durand, Dennis Quaid, Kate Walsh, and Tyrese. Bettany, in my opinion, is one of the most under-rated actors to ever grace a big screen. Taking on another dark role, he plays the Archangel Michael. The teaser released for this movie was creepy in hardcore. That little old lady scared the hell out of me. But the visuals were phenomenal, and the confrontation between Michael and Gabriel in the trailer gave me goose bumps. Expect good things. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1038686/

Again, if you're not in the mood for a serious save mankind flick, or you wanted to bring your little family members, you could go see:

The Tooth Fairy - From IMDB.COM "Derek Thompson is 'The Tooth Fairy,' a hard-charging minor league hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. When Derek discourages a youngster's hopes, he's sentenced to one week's hard labor as a real tooth fairy, complete with the requisite tutu, wings and magic wand. At first, Derek "can't handle the tooth" - bumbling and stumbling as he tries to furtively wing his way through strangers' home... doing what tooth fairies do. But as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams." Staring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Julie Andrews, Ashley Judd, and Billy Crystal. I love The Rock, and this movie just adds to his repertoire of heartfelt kid movies that he's recently been in. With an amazing supporting cast, The Tooth Fairy promises a fun, funny comedy in a month full of really serious movies.

January 29, 2010:

The Edge of Darkness - From IMDB.COM "As homicide detective Thomas Craven investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence." Starring Mel Gibson and Danny Huston. A new cop drama from Mel Gibson that had me chewing at the bit for more. The Trailer is filled with an intense, powerful aura that completely swept me off my feet. I can't wait for this one. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226273/

Honorary Mentions for January:

Daybreakers: Starring Ethan Hawke and Willam Dafoe. A vampire thriller in which the vampire mutation has taken over and the human species, and vampire's food supply, is going extinct. Opens January 8, 2010. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433362/

Youth in Revolt: Starring Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Zach Galifinanakis, Ray Liotta and Justin Long. A Teen Comedy about a 14 year old kid who tries desperately to lose his virginity to the girl of his dreams. Opens January 8, 2010 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403702/

Hoodwinked Too! Hood VS. Evil: Starring Hayden Panettiere, Bill Murray, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader and Joan Cusack. The Sequel to Hoodwinked reunites us with Red and the other fun characters as Red investigates the disappearances of Hansel and Gretel. Opens January 15, 2010 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844993/

When in Rome: Starring Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, Jon Heder and Dax Shepard. A romantic comedy where a (un)lucky girl grabs a handful of coins from a "fountain of love" and is pursued a host of men. Opens January 29, 2010 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1185416/
